Abstract

Background: Family caregivers play a crucial role in supporting hemodialysis patients and, in this process, face chronic psychological stress that can severely affect their mental health. While resilience is known as a psychological protective factor, the interaction between resilience, self-efficacy, and daily spiritual experiences in family caregivers has been less studied. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between resilience, self-efficacy, and daily spiritual experiences in family caregivers of hemodialysis patients.

Methods: This correlational analytic study was conducted in 2022 with 178 family caregivers of hemodialysis patients who were selected through convenience sampling based on the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (GSEQ), and Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale (DSES) questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS v22. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation test, and multiple regression analysis were used.

Results: In this study, 178 family caregivers with a mean age of 41.7 years participated in the study. Most caregivers had moderate resilience (74.2%) and self-efficacy (80.9%). Regarding daily spiritual experiences, 1.7% of caregivers were at a low level, 13.5% at a moderate level, 54.5% at a good level, and 30.3% at an excellent level of spiritual experience. The correlation analysis results showed a positive and significant relationship between resilience and daily spiritual experiences (r=0.439, P-value<0.001), while the relationship between resilience and self-efficacy was not significant (r=0.012, P-value=0.871). Multiple regression analysis also showed that daily spiritual experiences (β=0.312, P-value<0.001) and financial status (β=-0.229, P-value<0.001) were significant predictors of resilience, with the model explaining approximately 21.5% of the variance in resilience.

Conclusion: Daily spiritual experiences were identified as a significant predictor of resilience in family caregivers of hemodialysis patients. Interventions that focus on enhancing spiritual health and reducing economic stress can help improve resilience and mental health in this vulnerable group.
