Background: The present study was conducted to investigate the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the Modified Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire for Student Nurses (MMSQ-SN) in nursing students.
Methods: This cross-sectional, methodological study was conducted in 2024, recruiting a sample of 300 undergraduate nursing students spanning the fourth through eighth academic semesters. Cultural adaptation of the MMSQ-SN into Persian was accomplished through a rigorous forward-backward translation procedure. Psychometric evaluation of the preliminary instrument encompassed face validity and content validity, assessed via both qualitative appraisal and quantitative indices. Structural validity was investigated through exploratory factor analysis (EFA), subsequently corroborated by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Convergent and discriminant validity were appraised using the Fornell-Larcker criterion and the heterotrait-monotrait (HTMT) ratio, respectively. Internal consistency, as a measure of reliability, was quantified using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and McDonald's omega statistic.
Results: Also, 9 items of the original version of the tool were removed due to factor loadings less than 0.3, so the total number of questionnaire items is 21. The CFA findings confirmed all goodness-of-fit indices of the final model. Following the composite reliability (CR) and maximal reliability (MaxR) results, convergent validity was obtained for all three factors. The HTMT correlation results showed that there is acceptable discriminant validity between factor 1 and factor 2 (0.540), factor 1 and factor 3 (0.099), and factor 2 and factor 3 (0.147). In the EFA, the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value was 0.701. Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of the three factors extracted from MMSQ-SN were appropriate. The ICC of all items was calculated to be 0.986. Also, CR above 0.7 indicated adequate reliability of the construct.
Conclusion: According to the results, the Persian version of the MMSQ-SN has acceptable validity and reliability for measuring moral sensitivity in Iranian nursing students.
